Seattle RnR & Biking

Guys,

I have to apologize for not posting much lately.  I've felt rather boring & out of the blogging-world since I realized I couldn't run.  With traveling and work and trying to work on other personal goals, I haven't been reading blogs nearly as often either.  :(

These weeks of rest are apparently working for my hip - I'm able to sleep on it at night and walk/climb stairs without pain now.  I haven't dared try to run - I'm actually scared to run now.  :|  I've made the decision to skip the Seattle Rock n Roll Half - which was supposed to be my first.  Jess - from Blonde Ponytail - will be running w/ my bib.  I know it's for the best, and will make the See Jane Run half in Seattle - basically in my neighborhood - my first.  I'll be running with Kerrie, who is already practicing her supportive mom/drill sergeant speeches for me. :)

I was going absolutely STIR crazy not doing any physical activity, so I did cave and get the bike.  I've already put nearly 50 miles on it (and invested in my first pair of padded shorts.  WHEEEEE!)  I kind of really love riding it, but I'm making sure to avoid all of my normal running routes.  (Nothing would be more depressing than running a route that I had biked at 4x speed.  BLEH!)

I got those fancy clip-in pedals, which has taken a TON of getting used to.  I've fallen over once because I unclipped my left shoe...then leaned to my right to stop.  WHOOPS.  Of course a car was right there to watch it all.  I also crashed in the middle of the street, but came away unharmed, thank God.

I took a long ride (17 miles) on Sunday morning, while it was still super nice out in Seattle.  There were a TON of runners out, all with their hydration belts and handhelds.

A good number of them were taking healthy walking breaks as well - I was kind of glad I was creating my own breeze for myself. :)  I did a couple of laps of the trail by my house, then headed over to Husky Stadium.

I fell in behind a couple of more experienced bikers, and basically copied their speed through certain parts of the trail.  It was a GORGEOUS morning, and I made sure to tell the ladies I saw out on the trail 'Lookin Good!'.

According to my Garmin & online calculators, I burned nearly 900 calories - holy beans!  I was a bit stiff in my quads and butt, but nothing in my hip.  Workout jackpot!

  1. See Jane Run will be a better half for you, Chelsea. It sucks that you had to back out of RnR, but it's probably for the best. :( Heal heal heal! And man, what a lovely bike ride you had! Good job on that, dude! You'll be an even more powerful runner for See Jane!

  2. I'm so bummed about your injury! That's the worst. That said, it seems like you are recovering nicely. Keep blogging though girl, you're still interesting ;)

And if you know anyone else who wants a bib I've got two -- let me know. We are skipping it to since I want to put that vacation money towards really fun things like paying plumbers and rent and stuff. UGH.

    Rock on though!

  3. I'm so sorry you are injured Chels! I've been following how hard you have been training. I know YOUR race is in the future and I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO appreciative that you would allow me to run in your name.

Can't wait to see you in a few weeks!

  4. I'm sorry your hips have put you on the DL. Did you find out what the deal was with them so you can be ready for See Jane Run? Damn them! Are you already registered for See Jane? If not, you can have my bib...

  5. Bummer! I'm having hip problems too, so I've had to cut my mileage a bit, but I'm still going to be able to run the R & R. However, I feel your pain (quite literally).

I hope your awesome cross training keeps you happy, and maintains your fitness level so that you do amazing on the See Jane Run.

  6. Somehow I missed this post? Question: how do you clip in without falling over? Clip pedals scare me. Actually, bikes scare me a little, but that's another story.

  7. So, you clip in once you get started - you rest your shoe on the pedal, get going, then move your foot so the toe-area lines up with the clip on the pedal, and snap in on the downward part of your pedal. :) It's kind of fun to be all 'locked & loaded' but then you start coming to a stop and just go OH GOD. Or at least I do. :)
