For the last few months, I've been following the blogs of women who motivate me. Not all of them are runners - some are Cross-Fitters or walkers or just women who are busy like me.
A trend I started to notice was people catching on to the 'Primal' diet, which avoids sugars, processed foods, grains, and processed or low-fat dairy. I never thought I would be able to live without grain - and whole fat dairy? I had never even HAD full-fat yogurt in my life.
Between the sadness of bum-ankle-gate, and stress at work, I knew I needed something new to challenge me every day. I decided to try and live on the primal foods last week - and I did it. It was for 3 days, but I did it. I enjoyed full-fat greek yogurt for breakfast, delicious meats & veggies at lunch, and was completely full. Not stuffed full - but adequately full for HOURS. It was ridiculously awesome. I didn't notice much of a change energy wise as compared to going off sugar...but it was 72 hours. :P
After a long talk w/ M, I decided that Primal isn't sustainable in our lives right now. I had no plans to do it forever - or even longer than a week, but the big change worried him.
So, as a happy medium, I'm going to be primal-ish. I'm going to continue avoiding sugars, processed foods, and grains. I'm going to continue trying to cook the majority of my food, and get better at meal planning & buying good, organic grocieries on a budget. I'm going to continue packing my lunch everyday and thinking about what I am using to fuel my body. If I have some bread - or frosting - it's not that big of a deal.
(And, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this greek yogurt. NOM NOM NOM)

SOWL Week 9
Current Weight: 190
LW Weight: 189
LW Loss: +1
Total Loss: -10
And this is what a week full of beer, cookies, and cake will get you. I'm not upset though - this is a long journey, and one pound back on just means I have to work double hard this week and keep my goals in mind. :)
I'm rededicating myself to cut out the sugars & processed crap, and focus more on whole foods that feed AND fuel my body!

SOWL Week 8
Current Weight: 189
LW Weight: 191
LW Loss: -2
Total Loss: -11
I couldn't believe the scale this morning. I was picking up random items in my bathroom, weighing myself with them, and then re-weighing without them. There's no way, I thought. Last week I didn't track a calorie, ingested entirely too much booze, did one measly arms workout...but lost two pounds? Interesting.
I did notice I was eating less food - about 3/4 what I usually do. But other than that, I just ate things that were good for me and sounded good. (Wine and beer and vodka ARE good for you. Sometimes. Ahem.)
The 180's (wooo!) for me mean:
1) I am within 10 lbs of the weight on my driver's license (!!)
2) A weight I haven't seen since I was 14
3) Officially losing 35lbs.
4) Closer to my 40 lbs reward. TBD, but budgeting $250

Update
Since I can't run, and I've been *ahem* eating my feelings the last few days, I've been searching for some sort of inspiration to get back on track. And holy shit, I think I've found it.
March 7, 2010. 225 lbs.
August 7, 2010. 193 lbs.

Runner down!
Ugh, that's right. I'm hurt.
It was 95+ here all weekend. I took Saturday off from exercising after 4 miles on Friday. Sunday, we decided to go hit golf balls at the driving range of the golf course my in-laws live in.
It was all going great, until I accidentally put my token into the ball machine without a basket. Cue golf balls EVERYWHERE.
I caught as many as I could, and was trying to get over to M's box to deposit the balls. Unfortunately, there was a rogue golf ball in my path that I was unaware of. I came down on it with my right foot, kind of sideways.
I couldn't put my weight on my ankle for about 5 mins. I could walk gingerly after that. It was swollen, but not bruised or sore to the touch. I iced it, elevated it, and took some Advil.
And it's been the same ever since - almost 36hrs later. It's still swollen, though not bruised. I can walk okay, but have to go down stairs one at a time. Turning my foot in hurts like hell. And I keep hearing/feeling popping inside of my ankle.
Sigh. I was so looking forward to making 3 miles this week without walking. I was looking forward to EXERCISING after almost two weeks off.
In good news - I lost nearly 2 lbs on vacation. Whaaaaaaat.

SOWL Week 4
Current Weight: 193
LW Weight: 194
LW Loss: -1
Total Loss: -7
This is the first time I've lost weight in the week leading up to 'that week'. Woot!
Overall, a great week. I opted for good snacking choices (hellooooo cherries!), enjoyed my FAVORITE dinner at my FAVORITE restaurant - but stayed with a half portion so I wouldn't overeat.
M, being the lovely man he is, bought a Skinny Cow Ice Cream cup for me to enjoy with him on Sunday night. I was initially going to resist, but he put on those puppy dog eyes and ... I was toast. Interestingly enough - it didn't taste good. It seemed super chemically, the strawberry seemed metallic... I guess I am spoiled by the Real Food that has been going on here lately. (Although, if a Choco Taco were to appear in front of my face right now...)
Now, on to vacation. I won't be posting next week for Week 5 of SOWL. My goal is to not gain/lose while on vacation. We're going to be doing a TON of walking. It's also going to be super hot - which means I won't be hungry. Hopefully, a plan for success.

Who doesn't love crappy cell phone pictures?
See below - my favoritist dress. This thing fit like a GLOVE at the end of May. You can see the extra fabric on the one side is now the length of my finger! She took 3/4" off of each side and tapered part of the skirt so it wasn't so cupcake-y. I love you, Nordstroms.

Does anyone else lose weight like I do? One massive week of loss, then little numbers for a while, then another massive week? Frustrating!
But, one pound, I'll take, given last week's slip-ups. I'm going to list them, because it's a perfect example of how things add up. I kept saying 'oh this is just a small little thing today'. I stayed within calorie limits 6/7 days - but look at the bad things I ate!
Monday: N/A
Tuesday: 5 beers
Wednesday: 16oz Diet Coke, 1/2 Doughnut
Thursday: Specialty's Cookie
Friday: 1 Beer
Saturday: 3 fried Mini Corndogs, 10 french fries, hot dog + bun
Sunday: GIANT hot dog + bun, 1 16oz Microbrew, 1 16oz Coors Light
Eeeeep! Ahhhh well. Last week was a rough week, and this week is already looking 10000x better. I have two weeks until vacation, and I intend on hitting 190 before I leave. :)
Goals for week four:
Mental: Go! Push it!
Diet: More greens. Less bread carbs.
Exercise: Five miles on Tuesday night, another 5 on Sunday. Yeeahahhhhh.

SOWL Week 2
Current Weight: 195
LW Weight: 199
LW Loss: -4
Things I did last week:
I did sweat everyday except Thursday. Saturday, in lieu of an official workout, I cleaned out the garage for 4 hours. I did cut out obvious processed sugar from my diet (candy, cakes, sweetner, etc.) I also tried hard to cut out processed foods as best I could. Caloric intake stayed around 1400 for days when I exercised 20-30 mins, 1500 for days when I was 30+ min.
Goals for week three:
Mental: Take it one day at a time. A bit of rest won't kill you.
Diet: Look at labels. Cutting out sugar is great but what else am I missing?
Exercise: Sweat once a day. Except for Friday. Go FIVE miles on Sunday!

SOWL Week One
The week started off bright and sunny – TOO bright and sunny, with temps in the mid 90s. Ruh Roh. The minute the temperature goes over 83, my body swells up like CRAZY. Add in the woman issues, and well, I was at 204 during one point last week.
Post 4-mile sweaty, stinky run on Sunday, I was 197.
You do the math.
After re-hydrating yesterday, I’m at an even 199. That’s one pound of weight loss!
This week’s goals:
Mental: Stay POSITIVE! Eating right + sweating = weight loss. Don’t bungle it up by being frustrated.
Diet: No sugar. Yep. No cookies, cakes, sweets, or even aspartame. Had a killer headache yesterday, but feeling SO MUCH better today.
Exercise: Sweat once a day. Except for Friday.
